Infection around a dental implant

Infection around a dental implant

What is peri-implantitis?

Sometimes a dental implant becomes infected and causes an inflammatory process in the soft tissues around the implant - this condition is called peri-implantitis in medical terms.

Peri-implantitis is a pathological process that causes damage to the tissues around the implant; it is characterized by inflammation of the mucous membrane and progressive destruction of the bone around the implant.

The symptoms of peri-implantitis are the same as those of gum disease, namely: the gums around the implants are red and irritated, bleeding when brushing your teeth.

Just as natural teeth need to take care of oral hygiene (regular brushing, visiting the dentist), the same approach is required for dental implants.

Other risk factors for peri-implantitis include:

  • Tobacco;
  • Diabetes;
  • You don't pay attention to dental plaque;
  • Periodontal disease.

Remember that if you take care of your oral health, your dental implant will last you a lifetime.
