What is yellow nail syndrome? This diagnosis is more serious than a discolored nail that you can see visually. The syndrome causes nail changes and respiratory symptoms. Swelling and fluid accumulation in the lower extremities may develop. The most common sign is thick, yellow nails - it is quite possible that the nail will separate from the skin.
The syndrome affects the nails, lungs, and limbs.
The exact cause is unknown to scientists, although risk factors include circulatory disorders, fluid accumulation in the lungs, chronic disease, joint replacement, and dental implants.
Yellow nail syndrome is especially common in people over 50. Rarely, although sometimes patients are young children.
This syndrome is often observed in the following anamnesis:
- Autoimmune diseases;
- Cancer;
- Nephrotic syndrome;
- Rheumatoid arthritis;
- Thyroid disease.
Yellow nail syndrome is characterized by 3 main types of symptoms:
- The nail grows slowly or stops growing. It thickens, acquires a yellowish or greenish color;
- Fluid accumulation and swelling;
- Respiratory symptoms.
