What is cyanosis?
Cyanosis is a diagnosis that means that organs, muscles, tissues are not receiving enough blood and oxygen.
Cyanosis can be caused by many conditions and some require emergency medical intervention - usually the first aid is oxygen therapy.
Physiologically, red blood cells normally supply the organs with oxygen. Blood is red when it is full of oxygen. When oxygen-rich blood circulates, the skin has a pink or red tint. When the blood is deficient in oxygen, a blue or purple tint appears.
You may also notice other symptoms, including:
- Low body temperature;
- Numbness or tingling in the extremities;
- Coughing;
- Hoarseness;
- Difficulty breathing;
- Dizziness;
- Severe fatigue;
- Weakness.
Causes include:
- Wearing too tight, constricting clothing that restricts blood circulation;
- Being in an environment with too low an air temperature;
- A disorder that makes you prone to narrowing of blood vessels;
- Side effects of certain medications;
- A stroke;
- Toxins;
- Heart problems;
- Lung diseases;
- Respiratory tract pathologies.
