Scalp odor

Scalp odor

Causes.

A smelly scalp (also known as smelly hair syndrome) means that you have an unpleasant odor on your scalp.

An unpleasant odor on your scalp can be caused by poor hygiene (incorrectly selected hair care products, not washing your hair often, etc.) or a health problem.

The cause of the odor is the accumulation of skin cells, sweat, and sebum. It can also be caused by bacteria or fungi.

A smelly scalp is a symptom of the following medical conditions:

  • Dandruff;
  • A fungal infection of the scalp;
  • Hormonal changes;
  • Psoriasis;
  • Excessive sweating.

The following non-medical conditions can cause scalp odor:

  • Diet;
  • Poor hygiene;
  • Polluted air;
  • Sweating;
  • Washing your hair too often or too rarely.

Observe personal hygiene, for example, the interval between washings - and also choose a shampoo that is appropriate for your hair structure. If, despite taking into account these recommendations, the unpleasant smell of the scalp does not disappear and this symptom is accompanied by other signs, consult a doctor for diagnosis.
