Otitis media with effusion (Glue ear)

Otitis media with effusion (Glue ear)

What is otitis media with effusion?

This diagnosis means that fluid has accumulated in the child's middle ear. The main symptom is temporary hearing loss.

It often occurs against the background of an ear infection, although the cause may also be a blockage of the auditory tube.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, otitis media with effusion is cured without any intervention, although in the acute process a surgical procedure is necessary.

This diagnosis is especially common in children under 6 years of age, although adults are not immune either.

  • Characteristic symptoms are:
  • Change in behavior;
  • Drowsiness;
  • Decreased ability to concentrate;
  • Desire to play alone;
  • Does not respond to name, calling;
  • Does not understand what you say and asks you to repeat;
  • Asks to turn on the TV loudly;
  • Speaks loudly.
