A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac in the breast.
There can be a single or multiple cysts.
Scientists do not know the exact cause of breast cysts. They are most common in women between the ages of 45 and 50, but they can develop at any age. Statistically, they are most common during menopause.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is made by physical examination and ultrasound.
If the cyst is large enough to be felt, drainage is performed. This procedure is not necessary if the cyst is visible on ultrasound but is not causing discomfort to the woman, i.e. it is small in size.
The fluid removed by drainage may be clear or colored (yellow, green, black, orange). Doctors say that this fluid is normal and does not require additional examination or testing.
It takes several minutes to drain the fluid from the cyst - your doctor may recommend that you return to the clinic in a few months for monitoring.
