Milk allergy

In this type of allergy, the immune system has an overreaction to milk protein.

An allergist will make a diagnosis based on appropriate laboratory tests. Treatment includes medication, but the person should avoid dairy products.

Milk allergy is one of the most common types of food allergies. The most common food allergy is cow's milk.

Milk allergy can occur in people of any age, but is especially common in children under 16 years of age.

The allergic reaction occurs within minutes of consuming milk.

Mild symptoms include:

  • Allergic rash;
  • Nausea or vomiting;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Itching;
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat;
  • Hives.

Severe symptoms that require immediate medical attention include:

  • Chest tightness;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Difficulty breathing;
  • Difficulty swallowing;
  • Contact dermatitis;
  • Dizziness;
  • Low blood pressure;
  • Loss of consciousness.
