What is fibromuscular dysplasia?
This is a disease in which abnormal cells grow in the walls of the arteries. In severe clinical cases, fibromuscular dysplasia can cause aneurysms and strokes.
The diagnosis is especially common in women aged 40 to 70.
Scientists do not know the exact statistics, because many people do not show symptoms, and in many cases, fibromuscular dysplasia is diagnosed completely by chance, during the diagnosis of another complaint or pathology.
The exact cause of fibromuscular dysplasia is unknown, but some clinical cases have been linked to the following risk factors:
- Genetics;
- Hormones;
- Trauma to the artery wall;
- A condition exacerbated by smoking.
Some patients develop symptoms, including:
- A strange noise in the neck or abdomen (a doctor hears this sound with a stethoscope when listening to blood flow);
- Dizziness;
- High blood pressure;
- Migraine headaches;
- Neck pain;
- Ringing in the ears.
