What is a papule (nodule)?

A papule is a bulging area of skin tissue up to 1 centimeter in size. It may have clear or unclear boundaries.

A papule can be of any shape, color, size - it is not a diagnosis or a disease.

In a large percentage of clinical cases, it is not serious and can be treated at home. If papules appear after taking a new medication, be sure to inform your doctor.

The cause may be:

  • Contact dermatitis;
  • Wart;
  • Seborrheic keratosis;
  • Actinic keratosis;
  • Cherry angioma;
  • Contagious molluscs;
  • Keratosis pilaris;
  • Eczema.

Other potential causes include:

  • Side effect of medication;
  • Lichen planus;
  • Psoriasis;
  • Acute herpes;
  • Smallpox;
  • Leprosy;
  • Acrodermatitis;
  • Insect bite.
