What is paresthesia?
Numbness and tingling sensation in the leg, also known as paresthesia, is a common complaint.
It is quite expected that your legs will go numb if you sit in the same position for a long time. When a person sits for a long time without changing the posture, the blood circulation decreases or the nerve is put under excessive pressure - the condition will immediately improve as soon as you start walking.
However, unexplained and long-lasting, chronic numbness is an indicative symptom of a health problem, such as central nervous system or peripheral nervous system pathologies.
Other causes may be:
- Deficiency of vitamin B12;
- Skin frostbite;
- Insect bite;
- Chemotherapy;
- Operation;
- Vasculitis;
- Toxins in seafood.
Sometimes it appears on the background of trauma:
- Back injury
- Leg bone fracture;
- Disc herniation;
- Nerve compression;
- Neck nerve injury.
In some clinical cases, the cause of leg numbness is caused by neurological diseases or injuries.
Sometimes tingling and numbness in the leg are symptoms of chronic conditions.
