What is prosopagnosia?
Prosopagnosia is a condition in which it is difficult for a person to remember the faces of acquaintances, to recognize lines or expressions.
It usually develops on the background of brain damage, although some people have it from birth.
The course of treatment is focused on the management of the underlying cause - the patient manages to adapt to the diagnosis, to remember people, in various ways.
People with prosopagnosia have difficulty remembering familiar faces, for example, a relative, friend or co-worker is completely unknown to them.
Pathology hurts only the brain. This diagnosis often becomes a cause of anxiety - the patient feels uncomfortable because he does not see a familiar face in his loved ones. To alleviate the discomfort, many patients avoid public gatherings, refuse to attend various events in a familiar circle.
It does not matter whether prosopagnosia is congenital or acquired, in any case you should consult a doctor - it is quite possible that it is a manifestation of a serious neurological pathology.
Sometimes it is difficult for a person with congenital prosopagnosia to believe that he has this condition, because he has learned to live with the disorder, does not perceive the symptom as unusual, and moreover, in fact, has even developed certain methods to adapt.
Contact the clinic immediately if you suddenly notice that you have difficulty remembering faces, and especially if it is accompanied by symptoms typical of a stroke or brain injury.
Signs of a stroke are:
- Weakness and numbness of one part of the body;
- Slurred speech;
- Loss of vision in one eye;
- Hanging/dropping one shoulder of the face;
- Difficulty swallowing;
- Confusion, irritation;
- Sudden, severe headache;
- Impairment of concentration, ability to think, memory problem.
